Youth Community Council

Community Outreach Goal Three:
To build local capacity to understand and respond to environmental health challenges.

Youth Community Council (YCC)

Our main effort under goal three is directed toward building community knowledge and agency by engaging local Latino youth through the YCC,  a local leadership training for Salinas, CA, high school students. In 2010, local high school students were recruited to participate in the program and we have had two more rounds of recruitment since then. Currently, we have 15 active youth members participating in the various project of the YCC.

The three objectives of the YCC are to 1) educate youth on environmental health issues of concern, 2) conduct research using participatory methods, and 3) create opportunities where YCC members can share their work and take action to create healthier environments in their community.

  • Bi-monlthy meetings with informative discussion and engaging activities on the following topics:

What is health? Team building.  Media and mapping.  Setting goals, making a plan. Action project brainstorm. Introduction to public speaking. Elevator pitch – communicating your message in 30 seconds or less. Strategies to making change. Preparing a powerpoint presentation. Learning from other communities with field trips.
