Air pollution consists of chemicals or particles in the air that can harm the health of humans, animals, and plants.  It also damages buildings air pollution is often caused by emissions from cars, factories, and fire.

The main air pollutants are: Carbon monoxide (CO) Nitrogen oxides (NOx) Sulfur dioxide (SO2) Particulate matter (PM).

These pollutants can come from a variety of sources, including: Power plants Automobiles Industrial facilities Fires Air pollution can cause a variety of health problems, including: Asthma Bronchitis Cancer Heart disease Lung disease Air pollution can also damage crops, trees, and waterways.

Air pollutants and greenhouse gasses

 

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air pollution is “the presence of contaminants or pollutant substances in the air.” Greenhouse gasses are a type of air pollutant that contributes to the greenhouse effect. The main greenhouse gasses are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. 

Air pollution can come from both natural and man-made sources. Natural sources include wildfires, volcanoes, and windblown dust. Man-made sources include emissions from factories, automobiles, and power plants. 

Greenhouse gasses trap heat in the atmosphere and cause the Earth’s average temperature to rise. This can lead to global warming and climate change. Air pollution and greenhouse gasses can cause a variety of health problems, including respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and cancer. They can also damage the environment, including forests, lakes, and coral reefs.
