There are many types of air pollutants, each with different sources and effects. The most common air pollutants are: Carbon monoxide: carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced when fuels are burned. It is found in car exhaust and is a major air pollutant in cities. 

Carbon dioxide: carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced when fuels are burned. It is found in car exhaust and is a major greenhouse gas. Sulfur dioxide: sulfur dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced when sulfur-containing fuels are burned. It is found in coal-fired power plant emissions and is a major air pollutant in cities. 

Nitrogen oxides: nitrogen oxides are a group of gasses that are produced when fuels are burned. They are found in car exhaust and power plant emissions. 

Particulate matter: particulate matter is a mixture of solid and liquid particles that are suspended in the air. It is found in car exhaust, power plant emissions, and dust.

 

Air pollutants and their classification

 

The main types of air pollutants are particulate matter, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. 

  1. Particulate matter (PM) is a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets suspended in air. PM10 refers to particulate matter that is 10 micrometers or less in diameter, and PM2.5 refers to particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter. 
  2. Ground-level ozone (O3) is a colorless gas that forms when emissions from cars and factories react with sunlight. O3 is a main ingredient of smog. 
  3. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced when carbon-containing fuels are burned. 
  4. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a colorless gas that is produced when sulfur-containing fuels are burned.
  5. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a brown gas that is produced when nitrogen-containing fuels are burned.
